This website draws on the collections of the University of Otago, Division of Health Sciences and Hocken Collections, relating to face and jaw restorative surgery during and in the aftermath of World War I. It includes digitized images of clinical notes, photographs, radiographs and watercolour portraits of servicemen whose injuries were operated on by Dr Henry Pickerill. Dr Pickerill was the first Dean of the Dental School at the University of Otago and a pioneer in plastic and maxillofacial surgery. The Pickerill Papers on Plastic Surgery, held in the Hocken Collections, were added to the UNESCO Memory of the World register in 2015, recognising their value as a collection of significant documentary heritage.
